ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Dreaming of working closely with elephants in India? Want hands-on experience and a chance to assist in their daily care? You’re in the right place!

Our volunteer program is based near the iconic Amber Fort in Jaipur, in a special area known as “Elephant Village” or Haathi Gaon. This village, spread across 30 hectares, is India’s first and the world’s third elephant village. Developed by the Government of Rajasthan, it includes individual shelters for elephants, nearby housing for their caretakers (mahouts), and even a large man-made lake where the elephants can swim and bathe.

Mahouts and their families live on-site and are responsible for the elephants’ care—feeding them, maintaining their health, and ensuring their overall well-being. These elephants also play an important role in local festivals, cultural events, and traditional rides at Amber Fort.

Currently, Jaipur is home to 115 elephants. Of these, 52 are housed in the village, while the rest are still outside as the project site is under ongoing development.

Our volunteer program was created to support both the elephants and their mahouts. It’s a perfect blend of animal care, cultural immersion, and meaningful travel. Whether you’ve always dreamed of spending time with elephants, living like a local, or experiencing authentic Indian culture—this program brings it all together.

Come join us, get involved in daily care routines, connect deeply with these gentle giants, and help make a difference.

WORK FOR VOLUNTEERS

As a volunteer, your day will be hands-on and full of meaningful work. You'll help feed and bathe the elephants, clean their living spaces, carry water, massage their heads with oil, trim their nails, and take them for walks. You'll also prepare their meals—making bundles of hay and cooking chapatis (Indian flatbread) over a traditional mud stove.

Since elephants begin their day early, especially those giving rides at Amber Fort, you’ll need to start your day early too. Volunteers may also assist with elephants that are housed outside the main sanctuary area.

The program runs Monday to Friday, from 5:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., with two afternoon sessions each week from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays are for sightseeing around Jaipur, and Sundays are free for rest or day trips to nearby attractions like the Taj Mahal in Agra, Ranthambore for tiger safaris, or the holy town of Pushkar.

REVIEWS/TESTIMONIALS

Volunteers from around the world have had unforgettable experiences with us. Most of our participants come from the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Australia, and across Europe. If you're from one of these regions, we’re happy to connect you with past volunteers to hear directly about their time here.

Volunteering with animals in India is truly unique. Every year, people travel here to join wildlife and community programs—and many say it’s the highlight of their journey.

“The Elephant Sanctuary program made my trip both meaningful and fun. It was a real cultural eye-opener!” says Jessica Consoli from Switzerland, one of our past volunteers.

WHAT YOU WILL GAIN FROM THIS PROJECT

  • A truly unforgettable elephant experience in India.

  • Deep personal satisfaction from making a meaningful impact.

  • Create lasting memories while spending time in a vibrant and culturally rich country.

  • Immerse yourself in Indian culture—learn the language, traditions, and local lifestyle.

  • Enhance your CV with international volunteer experience in a developing country, giving you an edge in the job market.

  • Become a lifetime member of VWE after completing your project.

NOTE:-

The elephants in Jaipur are cared for by their owners, mahouts, and the Government of Rajasthan. They have been part of Indian culture for centuries—playing roles in tourism, festivals, and religious ceremonies. For safety and protection, you may sometimes see elephants in chains during the day. Before applying, please make sure you understand and accept this reality, and agree to the terms and conditions set by VWE.

LANGUAGE BARRIER

Language is generally not a concern for international participants. Our host families, staff, drivers, and many locals involved in the program can communicate in basic English. However, if you'd like to feel more comfortable, we offer a one-week Hindi language course (90 minutes per day, Monday to Friday) for $150. You can request this option when filling out your online application.

Arrangement of Room, Food & Transportation

At Elefun, we take care of all your basic needs from the moment you arrive in Jaipur. This includes your accommodation, meals, and daily transportation.

Where You’ll Stay
Volunteers live with warm and welcoming Indian host families, carefully selected based on VWE’s standards. These families have over 10 years of experience hosting international guests. You’ll stay in a clean, comfortable room—shared with another volunteer of the same gender. If you’re traveling with friends, family, or a partner, you’ll stay together. Prefer a private room? That’s available for an extra fee.

Host homes offer modern amenities including Wi-Fi, filtered drinking water, geysers, air conditioning, satellite TV, western-style bathrooms, and comfortable beds. They're located in city areas with easy access to banks, ATMs, shops, restaurants, and cafes.

Meals
You’ll be served three nutritious, home-cooked Indian meals daily—breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Typical meals include:

  • Breakfast: Tea/coffee with bread, poha, or Indian paratha

  • Lunch & Dinner: Two seasonal vegetables, chapatis (roti), rice, yogurt, and pickles

  • A basket of fruits is always available for snacking.

If you need extra nutrition, special dietary items, or prefer different food, you’re welcome to buy your own supplies from nearby markets.

Live Like a Local
Staying with a host family gives you a chance to experience Indian life up close—learn the language, enjoy traditional meals, and get immersed in local customs and culture. Most family members speak basic English and are very friendly and helpful.

Daily Transportation
Your commute to the project site (20–30 minutes away) is arranged by us. You'll travel by auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) or car, with daily pick-up and drop-off included.
